Pik Uk Prison reports death of prisoner

A 45-year-old Australian prisoner felt dizzy while taking shower in the bathroom of Pik Uk Prison about 3pm today (December 24). He was sent to the institution hospital and collapsed while waiting for examination.

First aid was immediately given by medical officer and correctional staff at the scene, a spokesperson of the Correctional Services Department said. He was sent to United Christian Hospital at 3.40pm and was certified dead at 4.14pm. Records show that he had a history of asthma.

The case has been reported to police and the Australian Consulate. An inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.

The prisoner, surnamed Grant, was convicted of "dealing proceeds of indictable offence" in February and given a 42-month sentence.
