Prisoner attacks staff member at Shek Pik Prison

A correctional staff member of Shek Pik Prison (SPP) was attacked by a prisoner today (January 5).

Two Correctional Assistants (AOI and AOII) and one officer, supervised by a Principal Officer, arrived at a prisoner's cell to search him and his cell soon after 9am. During the search, the prisoner, surnamed Ho, attacked the AOII with a piece of toilet bowl porcelain measuring 3cm x 5.5cm.

The other three staff members tried to subdue Ho by pushing him on the floor. As Ho continued to struggle, more staff arrived to assist. Despite repeated orders to calm down, Ho continued to resist violently. In view of his violent act and to prevent him from injuring himself and the others, OC foam was applied and Ho was consequently subdued.

In the incident, the AOII was injured on the head and left arm. He was sent to the Princess Margaret Hospital. The AOI suffered abrasions on his left arm and was treated in the institution. Ho's left finger was hurt and appropriate treatment was given by the Medical Officer of the institution.

The case was reported to police. Correctional Services Department will also look into the incident.
