Inmate attempting self-harm in hospital rescued

A patrolling officer of Correctional Services Department (CSD) prevented a female inmate from attempting to hang herself with bed sheet in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Custodial Ward at around 8.30am today (June 4).

The inmate was examined and treated. She was conscious and sustained abrasion marks on her neck. She will be attended by the hospital's psychiatrist for assessment.

A spokesperson for CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangement, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."

The 27-year-old inmate was convicted of breach of condition of stay. She has been admitted to Lo Wu Correctional Institution since October 2010.
