CSD officer successfully stops inmate attempting suicide

A Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer prevented an inmate from hanging himself with his bed sheet in his cell at Stanley Prison at around 10.30pm yesterday (March 14).

The inmate was conscious when found. After receiving first aid treatment from correctional officers, he was sent to Queen Mary Hospital for further examination and treatment.

A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The 60-year-old man was serving a life sentence on a charge of murder.
