Correctional staff seize suspected dangerous drugs

    

     Correctional officers seized suspected dangerous drugs from an inmate on remand at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday afternoon (August 21), thereby stopping an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into correctional institutions.

     The male inmate, aged 52, was remanded at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre for the offence of possession of dangerous drugs. On entering the institution, staff found him acting suspiciously. With professional judgement and alertness, officers subsequently found a tablet of suspected dangerous drugs concealed inside his nostril.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     A Correctional Services Department spokesperson said, "With an effective mechanism to collect intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 111 seizures of dangerous drugs of far this year, as at the end of yesterday. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
