Correctional staff stop inmate attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate attempting to harm himself at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre this morning (December 4).

At around 11.30am, an officer found the 28-year-old male inmate behaving emotionally and using a broken plastic mug to scratch his left forearm in the protected room for observation at the centre. The officer stopped him immediately. The inmate sustained minor injuries and was conscious at the time. He was given treatment by a medical officer in the hospital and will be sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was convicted of the offence of smoking, inhaling, ingesting or injecting dangerous drugs.
