Correctional officers intercept suspected dangerous drugs

Correctional officers seized suspected dangerous drugs from an inmate on remand at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (December 27), preventing an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into a correctional institution.

The drugs were found wrapped in a plastic pellet, measuring about 2 centimetres in diameter and 6cm in length, during a security check at about 9.30am, and were reported to the Police for further investigation. The 40-year-old male inmate was remanded at the reception centre for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

A Correctional Services Department spokesperson said, "With an effective mechanism to collect intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in our custody."

There have been 154 seizures of dangerous drugs so far this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
