CSD officers stop inmate on remand from attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate on remand from attempting self-harm at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre last night (February 8).

At about 8.40pm, correctional officers found the 36-year-old male remand inmate at centre hospital suddenly emotionally unstable and banged his head against a table corner. The on-site officers immediately stopped him from further self-harm. He sustained head injury and was conscious at the time.

After preliminary treatment at the centre hospital, the inmate was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. Arrangements will be made for him to see clinical psychologist for further assessment and counselling.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The remand inmate was admitted to the centre for offence of going equipped for stealing.
