Correctional officers rescue inmate from hanging

Correctional services officers rescued an inmate who attempted to hang himself in Stanley Prison early this morning (March 21).

During the night patrol an officer spotted the 25-year-old male inmate attempting to hang himself by using a bed sheet tied onto the window guard bar inside his cell. The officer immediately called for reinforcements. First aid was then given to the inmate, who was taken to a public hospital for further treatment. The inmate regained consciousness after treatment.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was admitted to the prison for the offences of robbery and wounding.
