Correctional officers rescue inmate from hanging

Correctional officers rescued a female inmate who attempted suicide by hanging at Lo Wu Correctional Institution yesterday (July 25).

At 9.52pm an officer noticed that the 48-year-old female inmate was attempting to hang herself by using a bed sheet tied to the grill gate in her cell. The officer immediately called for reinforcements.

The reinforcement officers entered the cell and applied first aid to the inmate, who was conscious at the time. The officers sent her to the centre's hospital for medical treatment, from where she was subsequently transferred to a public hospital for further examination. A clinical psychologist will follow up the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was convicted of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
