Correctional officers stop inmates attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped two male inmates attempting self-harm at Sha Tsui Correctional Institution today (September 16).

The first case involved a 16-year-old inmate, who was found drinking a small quantity of detergent while performing cleaning duty at about 9.35am. He was immediately stopped and sent to the centre hospital for preliminary treatment.

The second case occurred at about 10.15am. While working at the laundry workshop, a 17-year-old inmate was found drinking a small quantity of washing fluid. He was stopped immediately and sent to the centre hospital for preliminary treatment.

Both inmates were found conscious at the time. They were later transferred to public hospitals for further observation and treatment. Both of them are in stable condition. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the cases.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The 16-year-old inmate and the 17-year-old inmate were sentenced to detention centre for the offences of acting as a member of a triad society and obtaining property by deception respectively.
