Remand inmate hurts himself in Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre

     A male remand inmate hurt himeslf inside his cell in Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre last night (September 20).

     At about 11pm, correctional officers found the 52-year old remand inmate sitting on his bed in the cell and acting suspiciously, with abrasion marks and small amount of  blood stain on both wrists. Officers immediately called for reinforcement. After initial enquiries, officers found a pair of broken plastic eyeglasses at scene, and believed the remand inmate had used a piece of broken plastic to hurt himself. He was found conscious at the time.

     Officers sent him to the centre hospital for examination and treatment. Clinical psychologist will follow up the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The man was remanded for an offence of wounding with intent.
