Mind Melody – An Introduction

For many years, the Psychological Services Section of the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department has been integrating various therapeutic modalities into psychological treatment, with the aim of providing evidence-based and person-centered care. In 2024, Senior Clinical Psychologist Dr. Vivian Mak and Clinical Psychologist Ms. Eugenia Kam founded and launched “Mind Melody” – an initiative which aims to provide effective psychological treatment for persons in custody (PICs) experiencing emotional distress by incorporating musical elements. Groups are regularly facilitated by clinical psychologists at Stanley Prison, each comprising six sessions with approximately six participants per group.

Grounded in Narrative Therapy, the program aims to foster adaptive emotion regulation and facilitate PICs’ adjustment and rehabilitation through experiential activities. Research has robustly demonstrated that music effectively evokes memories stored in the brain and can serve as a powerful tool in eliciting and regulating emotions. Drawing on this, group activities include collective improvisation and jamming, song and lyric discussions, as well as life reviews using songs as a medium. Throughout these processes, psychologists guide PICs to identify the times when they successfully overcame difficulties in life, highlighting their inner strengths and resilience. Processing their lived experiences in such a way also instils hope, reframes their perception of self, and ultimately facilitates adaptive emotional regulation. In the end, clinical psychologists, PICs, and a music director co-create songs, which serve as a powerful documentation of their growth that reinforces and consolidates their positive changes. By publishing these songs, the public acts as a witness to their journey; with this external validation, their personal transformation is acknowledged as real and true, helping them solidify their determination to start anew.

Looking ahead, Mind Melody will continue to run regularly, with the vision of sharing more original songs co-created by persons in custody (PICs) and our clinical psychologists. Through this initiative, we hope to build a bridge across the prison walls, breaking down social barriers and allowing PICs and the public to connect heart to heart. We sincerely invite you to follow our future releases. Every click and every listen is a gentle yet powerful show of support for these changing lives. By walking alongside us, you give those behind bars the courage to rebuild their lives. Simply knowing that the community is willing to listen, wait, and believe in them provides the vital strength they need to go further and shine brighter on their journey of rehabilitation.

We warmly welcome you to listen to their songs below and be a part of their transformation.
